Jess and I wanted to do something fun—a typical request from two 16-year-old girls. Just old enough to drive around town on our own, we usually frequented Walgreens for energy drinks. There were times when we would sneak out of my house at 2 AM just to drive to Walgreens for some NOS energy drinks. Do you feel old?

2007 was a fun time. We never went to any parties or met up with other kids, but we did want to do something “crazy.” One particular night, we decided that the energy drinks weren’t enough. Along with our usual cans of NOS, we grabbed four 5-Hour Energy shots.

I had taken one before, but it didn’t do much for me. It tasted awful, to boot. Everything is always more fun in the middle of the night with your best friend, though. Once we obtained our artificial energy, we headed back to my house to begin our adventure.

We both drank our two 5-Hour Energy shots simultaneously; it was our biggest mistake.

Nothing happened at first. We were sitting in my bedroom doing our usual routine—talking about Myspace, the boys Jess was into, and how our Tae Kwon Do classes were…
